GCSE Geometry: Exam TIPS
1. Triangles
When given any triangle geometry question in a GCSE Maths exam paper, then the first thing you should do is identify whether the triangle is a right-angled triangle or a non-right angle triangle.
Scenario 1:
If it is a right-angled triangle then usually 2 rules could apply for a GCSE geometry question:
- Pythagoras theorem to find the missing side
- SOHCAHTOA rule to find the missing side (length) or angle
Scenario 2:
If it is a non-right angled triangle then usually 2 rules could apply for a GCSE geometry question:
- Using sine rule or cosine rule to find the missing length or side
- Using area of a triangle formula A = 1/2 x ab x SinC
Scenario 3
Sometimes the GCSE Maths geometry question could have a right-angled triangle attached to a non-right angled triangle to which you would need to use a mix of the rules found in scenario 1 and 2 to arrive at the final answer.
2. Areas:
When given any shape in the GCSE Maths or Geometry exam question it is really useful to write down all the formulas that are associated for that particular shape as these formulas can help guide you and trigger you to answer the question in the right way. There’s usually only one or 2 formulas for each shape but its definitely worth
- Memorising them
- Being confident in using these formulas (subbing in) to get your final answer. There’s no use to memorising the formulas without knowing how to use them!
